Early morning mist shrouded the vineyard. It should have given me more than length cover to sneak in and out undetected.
But it didn’t.
I heard the shots echoing behind me as I desperately tried to find my way around the tall thorny bushes. And vines. Occasionally running into poles and tripping. Getting back up, I managed to regain my sense of direction. Directions were easy anywhere they weren’t shooting at me.
What they hoped to hit by shooting at me in the early morning fog, I have no idea, other than that the first couple came way too close for comfort.
I was now well out of range of the guns. So I slowed down.
In a couple of cracks in the fog, I saw a landmark. So I headed for it.
While trying to get my heart and breathing to slow down I went over the mission. It has been a success.
I had broken into the main house, accessed their main server computers, without them knowing I was there at all. Manged to copy the files I got in and out undetected. Almost.
The damned dog of theirs was prowling the halls. He caught my scent and started barking. Which in turn raised the alarm. Thus, I had to abandon my plans for a stealthy exit and break out and generally run for my life.
But I had made it. As far as I know, they shouldn’t have any idea who I am, or why I was there.
They would find out tomorrow when I presented their files to the board of directors and they were exposed as the cheats that they are. And I would be named as the new president of the company. Then I would show them how a real thief works.
